Syria says up to 5,000 Chinese Uighurs are fighting in militant groups in Syria

The Syrian ambassador to China said on Monday that up to 5,000 ethnic Uighurs from China’s Xinjiang region are fighting in militant groups in Syria. Ambassador Imad Moustapha added that while some are fighting with ISIS, many were fighting "under their own banner." Xinjiang has faced unrest between the Muslim Uighur minority and the ethnic Han Chinese population. Beijing blames the violence on Islamist extremists.

On 13 May 2015, the Bilateral Commission of the Holy See and the State of Palestine, which is working on a Comprehensive Agreement following on the Basic Agreement, signed on 15 February 2000, held a Plenary Session in the Vatican to acknowledge the work done at an informal level by the joint technical group following the last official meeting held in Ramallah at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Palestine on 6 February 2014.

Qatar and France yesterday signed a 6.3bn euro (7.02bn) deal for the sale of 24 Rafale fighter jets, an accord President Francois Hollande hailed as a mark of Gulf Arab regard for French regional strategy. The accord was signed as President Hollande paid a one-day visit to Qatar.

The United Nations SG Ban Ki-moon met with Pope Francis in the Vatican, before going on to address a conference exploring the moral issues connected to climate change. The UN leader said he had a “fruitful and wide ranging conversation" with the Pope and he commended participants in the symposium "for raising awareness of the urgent need to tackle climate change".
