Syria says up to 5,000 Chinese Uighurs are fighting in militant groups in Syria

The Syrian ambassador to China said on Monday that up to 5,000 ethnic Uighurs from China’s Xinjiang region are fighting in militant groups in Syria. Ambassador Imad Moustapha added that while some are fighting with ISIS, many were fighting "under their own banner." Xinjiang has faced unrest between the Muslim Uighur minority and the ethnic Han Chinese population. Beijing blames the violence on Islamist extremists.
