Russian FM Lavrov Arrives in New York for 70th UN General Assembly

New York - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has arrived in the United Nations headquarters in New York for the 70th UN General Assembly, a Russian delegation source said Saturday. The jubilee session of the General Assembly opened on September 15 and runs through October 6.

International security, counterterrorism, climate change, reform of the UN Security Council and human rights are high on the agenda of the session. “Lavrov will hold more than 50 meetings at various levels on the sidelines of the General Assembly,“ the source told RIA Novosti. Lavrov is expected to meet NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier among others. The Russian diplomat will also meet Iranian and Syrian foreign ministers, Mohammad Javad Zarif and Walid Muallem, as well as the newly appointed Greek diplomat Nikos Kotzias, the source added. The annual general debate at the UN General Assembly will take place on September 28 — October 3. President Vladimir Putin is expected to lead the Russian delegation and will address the General Assembly about the crises in Ukraine and Syria as well as the international fight against terrorism.
